Pru Morrison “On the Move”
Exhibition of ceramic vessels
A road trip from Brisbane to Adelaide in late 2007 provided inspiration for the works produced by Pru Morrison in her latest exhibition “On the Move” at Marks and Gardner Gallery. Disconnected characters and events viewed on her travels collide and intersect on Pru’s vessels, bus stops, servo stations; roadside cafes all provide a narrative for these satirical and often humourous commentaries of contemporary life.
Although turning to ceramics rather later than most –, her initial studies were in photography and printmaking, Pru has made a significant impact on Studio ceramics Australia wide. She has exhibited with well known artists Mel Robson and Shannon Garson and earlier this year teamed up with 60s funk artist Margaret Dodd for a collaborative exhibition at the South Australian Jam Factory.
Pru’s ceramic forms may be domestic in scale however a detailed reading of the surface decoration soon shows that the message there is anything but small. Pru treats the surface of her works as a canvas to air often controversial views on current affairs, politics, art, religion and modern lifestyles. Carved and incised, using ancient methods of terrasigilatta and scraffitto, intricate drawings and text are a trade mark of her work. Unable to be viewed from one side it is necessary to view the work from all angles to take in the whole picture.
The past year has been significant for this artist – the major award from exhibition at the Cairns Regional Art Gallery, the SA collaboration with Margaret Dodd’s, as well as several art prizes and will culminate in her exhibition in December at Marks & Gardner Gallery.
